Quentin Blake Speaks

As children we devoured Roald Dahl books, and especially relished the fantastic illustrations accompanying each story. Last week, Quentin Blake gave a talk about his relationship with the author and the way they collaborated to perfect the balance of dark themes and reassuring images. Quentin is a delightful man, still hard at work after a career spanning four decades. He reminded us that even artists as skilled as he, make several attempts to accomplish their final illustrations – a notion hard to imagine considering the seeming spontaneity of his line. I felt very comforted as an illustrator in his presence, and inspired to keep moving.
