A disasterous proportion of English vocabulary has been lost over time. We’ve been lazy. Or have we. Actually Stephen Fry has a lot to say about the new and old English tongue and I find him very persuasive.
But all the same, there are those who like to invent, adapt and those who like to preserve. In order to fully express ourselves, we may as well do all three.
So The Oxford University Press have set out to save abandoned words by offering you a word to adopt. They say that “90% of everything we write is communicated by only 7,000 words”. Their mission is to revive the rich language we once had. You choose a word and solemly swear to use it day by day so that others pick it up and popularise it once more.
