There must be a great many entries for The Folio Society & House of Illustration competition this year. The brief was to illustrate pages of ‘The Bloody Chamber’ by Angela Carter. It is exciting to find artist’s interpretations surfacing on their blogs. I have a good feeling about Katie Harnett’s work.

Cape of the Golden Silk Spider

Currently on show at The Victoria & Albert Museum in London is one extraordinary garment woven of a spider’s silk. To create a length of fabric, four meters long, required the contribution of over a million female golden orb-weaver spiders, and a great many spider hunters, silk extractors. embroiderers and weavers.

Daisy

I spent the last four weeks in the company of this little dog, Daisy. She was plump as a seal and so sneaky. Her great vice was sleeping on the sofa, which was against house law. At least five times a day we’d find her comfortably snuggled up in a cushion, and every time she would pretend it was an outrage to be shuffled off her warm seat. If you tried to lift her, she’d wait till your hands were tucked under her back then she’d roll towards you and make big sad innocent eyes. She was so entertaining, I found myself taking quite a few photographs of her. Here’s a small selection…

This title has a good message. It belongs to a website devised by Kate Singleton, whose intention is to bridge the gap between the sale of prints and overpriced original artwork. Every Tuesday introduces a new artist & six original pieces of their work. Buy Some Damn Art began with two of my favourite painters, Yelena Bryksenkova & Becca Stadtlander, whose work sold in an instant. To give some insight into the lives of the artist, the galleries are accompanied by a brief interview and this makes the commitment to buying an artwork an evermore personal experience.

It will be a long time again till another post perhaps but there are lulls and changes in the life of an unprofessional blogger. Being creative requires phases of research and collecting, followed by a season of pondering, absorbing and making. A weekend at Renegade Craft Fair

Zosienka & Rosie had a stall at The Renegade Craft Fair last weekend. It was so well put together and involved a great many makers with super skills and ideas.

Only in the last minutes did i have a chance to dash around and blink at a few displays. I was very pleased to make the acquaintance of print maker Ellie Curits who had fantastic cushions on show. I managed to quickly buy a gift at Kate Sutton’s stall too, but the vision that has stayed with me still till now is that of the severed leg catnip toy by Life with Tigers! Oh how I wished I had a stripey whiskered creature to buy it for!

Five From The Ground

Five From the Ground is a shop in Japan that looks like the sort of place you’d rush into frantically on a rainy day and feel so cosy and comforted you’d never leave. If you aren’t in Kanagawa on a rainy day however, you can look through these windows…

Most of the goods have had a previous life, but the wire work is new and fashioned by Masao Seki. The circular cityscape is very special. I think it should be worn as a ring and signify a change in someone’s life when they settle in a new part of the world.
